Style and fashion- the same thing, right? Wrong.
Being someone who is so passionate about both, this confusion between the two needs to be cleared up once and for all.
First of all, what do each of these words mean? A simple definition from yours truly:
Fashion- A trend in time, usually referring to clothing. Usually this fashion lasts for a period of time then becomes outdated; when done right, can make you look like you just stepped out of a Vogue photo shoot or New York Fashion Week, when done wrong, will make you look like you haven’t got a clue.
Style- A timeless outfit/ look enveloping one’s personality and brand. A classic look that represents you, unique to yourself. Can style go wrong? Absolutely- when confused with fashion.
Don’t get me wrong here, I LOVE fashion; I literally live and breathe it; it’s my whole world and life.
Don’t think I’m saying fashion is bad- I wouldn’t say that in my wildest dreams.
In fact, when fashion is combined correctly with style, is when the really amazing looks are made.
What do I mean by this?
Here’s an example:
You buy a new jacket from a big brand (Gucci for instance), literally every Instagram model and celebrity is wearing it; it is the “it-item” of now.
You are dying to wear the jacket out, but how do you wear it?
My style for example, is minimal and clean (reflected in this blog), so I wear some simple jeans, strappy heels, messy bun, lip gloss, hoop earrings, etc. All in neutral colours to keep the style of the outfit looking minimalistic and clean.
BUT, you’re style might be loud and colourful; you might add bright red shoes, orange earrings, a pink mid-skirt, and then tie it all together with a matching bag.
And the list goes on for every style.
Fashion may be the item you are wearing, while style is how you wear it.
While that sounds like nearly every single “fashion quote” search on Pinterest, it is so true.
So why are the two words mixed up so often?
Because they are both associated with the same thing.
It’s like saying beauty and makeup- different words with different meanings, but are both usually associated together and fall under the same category.
Are they the same though?
Of course not!
If you’ve ever noticed, or if I’ve ever written to you and told you what stylequeen101.com is about, I usually say this:
I’m Stylequeen101, the Australian style, beauty and fashion blogger behind stylequeen101.com.”
See what I did there? I put them as two separate categories.
I know I sound like I’m having a little rant about this- I promise you I’m not. I’m only explaining because most people genuinely don’t understand the difference.
I don’t blame them either because no one ever really has said that they aren’t the same and why they aren’t.
They have always just been considered as the same.
I love both fashion and style equally and infinitely, which is why I think that they deserve this clarification.
Maybe, this opinion is my own though.
Maybe, you disagree.
Do you believe that style and fashion are the same thing, pure synonyms?
Personally, I’ve made my opinion clear: style and fashion are not the same and need to stop being considered as the same.
Style is a deep and personal show of your character, fashion are the trends that are put out yearly.
Fashion can be forecasted and is ever-changing while style is classic, unique and timeless.
In simplest terms- fashion changes, style stays.
